Büro Destruct is a graphic design collective of five members, since 1994. BD creates typefaces, logotypes, books, posters, illustrations and 3D for clients anywhere in the world.
How would you characterize your design style?
We do acrobatic splits between art, graphic design and advertising. The work sometimes acts like a wild child.
Place of work
Can you give us a short description about your font?
A neutral font with many characters.
Why did you design this font and what was your inspiration?
Barcode (EAN/UPC), fonts like «OCR B» (OCR = optical character recognition).
Highway and numberplate fonts.
We liked to use the OCR font by Adrian Frutiger a lot but I thought it would be nice to create our own since it was so overused.
What was this font intended for and what was the main idea behind designing the font?
The idea behind this font was to create an alternative BD version of a mono-spaced font used for barcodes and barcode readers. We wanted to make a font that is not just for headlines but also as a readable font for body text. It was first used it for the editorial design of the Japanese graphic design compilation book "Narita Inspected".
What is the ideal usage of your font?
Editorial design, Architecture
Where does the name come from?
«BD» is the identification code of all BD fonts.
«R» is the addition for «Recognition»
«Mono» comes from mono-spaced. (even the BDRmono is not really mono-spaced)
Do you think that too many fonts exist?
No. There is always an open door for a new font. Of course, there are a lot of unnecessary fonts, you just need to avoid them and pick the right ones.
Your future plans?
Extending the BDRmono and some other BD fonts with the Japanese Katakana and Hiragana characters as well as Cyrillic characters.
