Laminat (lah-mee-naht) is a sprightly font with personality that can illustrate any message without any additional accessories. All the letterforms are drawn in a single line with no bends and have a closed path giving the font a distinctive chunky and illustrative yet debonair appearance. The characters in the Laminat family, in all three weights – Light, Bold and Plain – share the same height which allows for freedom in combining lowercase and capital letters as well as different weights. Plain can serve as a fill-in for the other two weights, but also functions by itself. Well suited for lettering and headlines or ‘as cutout shapes for cookie bakers’, the true essence of Laminat unfolds starting at 36 points.

A short description about the font
All the characters in Laminat (lah-mee-naht) are drawn with a single line. There are no bends; merely ribbons tied to close the paths. Every shape gets its own individual and ideal curve, making them brothers and sisters.
Laminat has a strong personality. It is very illustrative and chunky yet still gracious. It comes in three weights — Light, Bold and Plain. Plain serves as a fill-in for the other two weights, but also functions by itself.
What was the main idea behind designing the font?
For many centuries, I worked on a formal language describing a complex image in one coherent stroke. It became obvious that this would also work with type.
How would you characterize your style?
I think I’m a natural drawer by birth. And since I spend a lot of time drawing, I think I just have a good sense and know how things should look. This is probably what gives my graphic design the expression that it has.
How did you come up with the name of the font?
Laminat in German is imitation parquet flooring. There is also ‘imitation’ imitation parquet flooring. The original meaning of Laminat is so far off, that it almost gives the word a new meaning and context. I like it!
What inspires you?
Usually I'm inspired by failed design.
Which is the bigger challenge – working on your own or with a strict briefing?
Actually it doesn't matter, whether I'm working under my own or foreign influence. However, it seems like an artistic and psychological challenge to convince someone other than myself of the result.
Do you have a working routine? Which are the ideal conditions to work in?
I don't know. I can't help being so handsome and strong.
What is the ideal usage of your font?
As a cutout shape for cookie bakers, if that's what you like.
The distinctive appearance of Laminat in capital letters can carry any message without any extras.
The true essence of the font unfolds starting at 36 points.
How would you describe the state your handwriting?
Whoever cares to know can have a letter from me.
Where does the font end, where does the image begin? Is there a line to draw?
My fonts are usually hybrids, which means, to me, they are readable illustrations. If the content was lethally boring, at least there is still some visual entertainment for everyone.
Your future plans and projects?
With the royalties, I’ll make a trip to an island and then I'm taking my daughter to Rome to have an ordinance with the Pope. And in the fall, I'm opening up a men's boutique in Wuppertal.
